Christmas date night in Bournemouth: an evening plan
Christmas date night in Bournemouth: skate under the lights, Glow Golf after dark, the Festive Trail, then the Alpine Lodge Après Bar. What to book and when.
On this page
A Christmas date night in Bournemouth needs no car and very little planning: everything sits between Bournemouth Square and the Lower Gardens. From 12 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, Christmas in Bournemouth puts an ice rink, a lights trail, after-dark mini golf and a two-storey bar within a few minutes of each other, the organisers say. Here is an evening in the order we would do it, with what to book.
Book one activity, keep the rest free
Entry to the site is free. Pick one ticketed thing to anchor the evening and book it in advance, because the organisers warn some slots sell out and late arrivals may lose theirs:
- A skate. SKATE Bournemouth is an open-air rink in the Lower Gardens under lights and festive canopies, which the organisers bill as the south coast's largest outdoor ice rink. Weekends fill fast. Our rink guide covers the sessions.
- Glow Golf. After dark, the 18 Christmas-themed holes of the Gardens Mini Golf switch to glowing balls and lights. Before 5pm it is a family course, so book an evening slot. See Glow Golf.

An evening, in order
5pm, the market. Market stalls close at 8pm (7pm on Sundays), so browse first. The organisers list over 40 traders with handmade and traditional gifts. It is card and contactless only.
6pm, your booked slot. Skate or play a round. Next to the rink, the Moguls Bar serves hot chocolate, mulled wine and spiced cider, and takes table bookings if you want a seat afterwards.
7pm, snowfall. On Friday to Sunday, artificial snow falls from the Alpine Lodge balcony at 7pm and from the giant trees on the trail at 6pm and 8pm. Monday to Thursday it is 5pm at both, the organisers say.
7.30pm, the Festive Trail. Walk the free trail through the Lower Gardens: thousands of lights, animated displays and a walkway of real Christmas trees. We would expect it to be quieter once families with small children have gone home.
8.30pm, food. The food stalls stay open until 10pm daily, with a hog roast among them. For a sit-down dinner instead, the Bournemouth Guide's where locals eat has local recommendations.
9.30pm, the Alpine Lodge. Finish at the Alpine Lodge in the Square. Downstairs is a Christmas bar with steins, festive cocktails and mulled wine. Upstairs, the Après Bar has DJs every Friday and Saturday, booth seating and a balcony over the market and the trail. Outside, converted ski gondolas can be booked as private booths, which is the closest thing here to a table for two. Our Alpine Lodge guide has more.

Which night to choose
Friday and Saturday bring the DJs, the extra snowfall times and the longest lodge hours: the lodge page lists 11am to midnight on those nights and 11am to 11pm otherwise, though the organisers' FAQ says 11pm daily, so check before you go. Midweek trades the music for more space. Upstairs also hosts quiz nights, karaoke, bingo and live music on other nights; the organisers do not list which.
If the weather turns
The event is outdoors and the organisers say it continues in most weather. The Alpine Lodge bar is the obvious place to warm up, so a booked table or booth is worth having on a wet December night. For the wider season, our winter in Bournemouth guide and the Bournemouth Guide's winter page cover what else is open.
Making a night of it
A late finish is easier when bed is a walk away. Flexiestays' hotels are on the West Cliff, about ten minutes on foot from the Square, and self check-in means you can arrive in the afternoon, drop your bags and leave the evening open. Booking direct on Short-Term Rentals in Bournemouth - Weekend & Business Stays is cheaper than the big platforms.
