Bournemouth Christmas Market 2026 opens in Bournemouth Square on Thursday 12 November and trades until 31 December, according to the organisers' market page. They promise over 40 traders, which they call their largest-ever market, with handmade gifts, a hog roast and hot chocolate. It is free to walk round and runs every day from 11am.

The market is one part of Christmas in Bournemouth, alongside the Festive Trail and the ice rink in the Lower Gardens. For the full season dates, see our dates piece.

Where is the market?

The chalets fill Bournemouth Square, the junction at the top of the Lower Gardens where the main shopping streets meet. The organisers give the postcode BH2 6ED. From the Square the Festive Trail runs down through the gardens towards the pier, so the market is the natural start or finish of an evening on the trail.

Who are the 2026 traders?

The organisers' page says the 2026 trader list is "coming soon", so we cannot name stallholders yet. What they describe is a mix of handmade and traditional gifts, with food and drink chalets among them. Two things they mention by name are a hog roast and luxury hot chocolates.

One hut is set aside for Bournemouth businesses. The "Best of BMTH" hut gives local independent traders a week-long trading slot each, so its stock changes through the season. A return visit later in December may find different makers there.

What are the opening hours?

  • Opens: daily from 11am.
  • Stalls close: 8pm, or 7pm on Sundays, according to the market page.
  • Food stalls: until 10pm every day.

The organisers' FAQ gives the hours as 11am to 8pm with food traders to 10pm, without the Sunday exception. If you are shopping late on a Sunday, check before you go. The Alpine Lodge bar in the middle of the market stays open later; our Alpine Lodge piece covers its hours and bookings.

Is the market cash or card?

Card and contactless only, the organisers say, so bring a card or a phone that pays.

When is it quietest?

The organisers say the market trades for the full six weeks and claim over 5 million visitors across the season. Weekday mornings and early afternoons, soon after the 11am opening, are the obvious time to browse without queues. Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest, with the stage performing and the lodge's DJs upstairs.

The free carol and choir performances on the stage next to the Alpine Lodge are worth timing a visit around; the schedule is on the organisers' carols page.

What about the weather?

The market is outdoors and the organisers say it carries on in most weather. Toilets, including accessible ones, are on site and nearby, and many outdoor areas have accessible routes, according to the organisers' FAQ. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in many outdoor areas.

Planning the rest of the day

The market sits at the top of the Lower Gardens, so the trail, the rink and the seafront follow on foot. The Bournemouth Guide's market listing keeps the event details, its Christmas guide covers the town beyond the Square, and our Christmas itinerary puts a day in order.

Staying nearby

Flexiestays' hotels are on the West Cliff, about ten minutes on foot down to the Square. That means shopping bags can go back to the apartment before an evening on the trail. Booking direct on flexiestays.com is cheaper than the big platforms; the hotels page lists all eight.
