The best free Christmas things to do in Bournemouth all sit inside one festival. Christmas in Bournemouth, run by Alpine Christmas Markets from Thursday 12 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, is free to enter, the organisers say, and a good part of what happens there costs nothing at all. Here is what you can do without a ticket, and where the paid parts begin.

Is Christmas in Bournemouth free?

Entry is free across all three parts: the market in Bournemouth Square, the Festive Trail in the Lower Gardens and the area around the SKATE ice rink. The organisers say free-to-enter areas need no booking. What costs money is a short list of ticketed experiences: ice skating, the Christmas Tree Maze, Glow Golf, Story Time with Santa and booths in the Alpine Lodge. Everything below is on the free side of that line.

Walk the Festive Trail

The Festive Trail runs through the Lower Gardens with what the organisers describe as thousands of lights, illuminated and animated displays, photo spots and a walkway of real Christmas trees. It is the free spine of the whole event, linking the market, the rink, Santa's Workshop and the Big Wheel. Go after dark for the lights; the Lower Gardens run from the Square down towards the pier.

Browse the market

The organisers promise over 40 traders in what they call their largest-ever market, with handmade and traditional gifts, a hog roast and hot chocolates. Looking costs nothing. The market page lists stalls open daily from 11am, closing at 8pm (7pm on Sundays), with food stalls until 10pm. Market stalls close for the season on 31 December. If you do buy, bring a card: the market is cashless.

Free shows on the Square stage

Three things happen on the stage next to the Alpine Lodge, all free:

  • Carols and choirs. Local choirs, bands and dance groups, from the opening night on 12 November through to 20 December on the published list. Our carols schedule has every date.
  • Santa's story at 5.30pm. After his workshop sessions, Santa comes to the stage to tell a festive story. The organisers stress this is a storytelling, not a one-to-one meeting, and they have not listed which days it runs.
  • The story competition winners. Two children's stories chosen in the competition with Bournemouth Writing Festival are read by Santa on stage, with their young authors beside him.

Snowfall and characters

Artificial snow falls from the Alpine Lodge balcony at 5pm Monday to Thursday, and at 2pm, 5pm and 7pm Friday to Sunday, the organisers say. On the trail, the giant trees snow at 5pm Monday to Thursday and at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm Friday to Sunday. More times may be added.

Fairies, elves and an "Elsa" roam the Square and the gardens every Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm, and pose for photos. A weekend afternoon catches both the characters and a snowfall.

The kids trail booklet

Children can pick up the Christmas booklet, with puzzles, jokes and a trail map, at the Alpine Lodge, Santa's Workshop, the maze, Glow Golf or the rink, then hunt for clues and secret letters across the site. One family wins a prize at the end of the season. The organisers' page does not mention a charge for the booklet; ask when you pick one up. Our kids trail guide explains how to hand it in.

Where the free part ends

The rides and games, including Santa's Express, the sleigh ride simulator, the prize stalls and the Big Wheel, need no pre-booking, but they are not on the organisers' free list. Skating, the maze, Glow Golf and Story Time with Santa are ticketed and sell out at busy times. For a full day that mixes free and paid, see our Christmas itinerary, and the Bournemouth Guide's Christmas guide covers the rest of the town in December.

Staying nearby

Flexiestays' eight hotels are on the West Cliff, about ten minutes on foot from the Square and the Lower Gardens, so the evening snowfall and the trail lights are a walk away rather than a drive. Booking direct on flexiestays.com costs less than the big platforms, and you can check availability for your dates on our serviced apartments page.
