The Bournemouth Festive Trail 2026 is a free lights walk through the Lower Gardens, open from 12 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 as part of Christmas in Bournemouth. The organisers promise thousands of lights, illuminated and animated displays, photo spots and a real Christmas Tree Walkway, according to their Festive Trail page. You do not need a ticket to walk it.

Several ticketed attractions sit along the route, and the market and the Alpine Lodge are at its top end in the Square.

Where is the Festive Trail?

The trail runs through the Lower Gardens, the park that leads from Bournemouth Square down to the pier and the seafront, with the Bourne stream running through it. The Bournemouth Guide's Lower Gardens page and its gardens guide show the layout and what the gardens are like by day.

Starting at the Christmas market in the Square and walking down is the natural direction, ending near the pier. Our winter walks guide has routes that carry on along the seafront.

What is on the trail?

The organisers list:

  • Thousands of lights and illuminated displays through the gardens
  • Animated displays and photo spots
  • The Christmas Tree Walkway, made of real Christmas trees

Along the trail, and in some cases ticketed, are:

  • the Christmas Tree Maze, 300 illuminated trees (bookable); our maze piece explains how it works
  • festive mini golf, which becomes Glow Golf after dark (bookable)
  • SKATE Bournemouth, the open-air ice rink (bookable)
  • Santa's Workshop, home of Story Time with Santa (bookable)
  • Santa's Express, the Christmas train, and the Big Wheel
  • the Christmas market and the Alpine Lodge in the Square

What is free and what costs?

Walking the trail and seeing the lights is free and needs no booking, the organisers say. The rides and games in the gardens, including the train, the Big Wheel and the prize stalls, need no pre-booking. The rink, Glow Golf, the maze and Story Time with Santa are ticketed and can be booked ahead. Prices for 2026 are not in what we have read; each attraction's page is the place to check.

When is the best time to walk it?

The lights are the point, so after dark is the obvious answer; in November and December that means from late afternoon. The artificial snow falls from the giant trees on the trail at set times, the organisers say: Monday to Thursday at 5pm, and Friday to Sunday at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm, with more times possibly added. Timing a walk to catch one is easy.

Weekends bring the Christmas characters, too: fairies, elves and "Elsa" roam the Square and the Gardens every Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm, posing for photos, according to the organisers.

Practical points

  • Weather: it is outdoors and the organisers say it runs in most weather.
  • Dogs: well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in many outdoor areas, but not inside some attractions.
  • Access: many outdoor areas have accessible routes, and mobility aids are welcome in the wider areas; some attractions have restrictions, so check the experience page.
  • Toilets: on site and nearby, including accessible ones.
  • Photography: welcome in many areas, the organisers say.

Families on the trail

Children can collect a Kids Trail booklet at Santa's Workshop, the maze, Glow Golf, the rink or the Alpine Lodge and hunt for clues along the route. The Bournemouth Guide's Christmas guide covers the rest of the season, and our season dates piece has the opening and closing days.

Walking from the West Cliff

Flexiestays' hotels on the West Cliff are about ten minutes on foot from the Square and the top of the Lower Gardens. That makes the trail an evening walk from the door, with no parking to find; the Help Centre parking page covers arriving by car. Booking serviced apartments direct on flexiestays.com is cheaper than the big platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The organisers say the Festive Trail is free to enter and needs no booking. Some attractions along it, such as the ice rink, Glow Golf, the Christmas Tree Maze and Story Time with Santa, are ticketed.

The trail runs through the Lower Gardens, which begin at Bournemouth Square, where the Christmas market is. Most people start at the market and walk down through the gardens towards the pier.

The organisers do not give a walking time. The Lower Gardens are a short park, so the lights alone are a stroll; stopping at the rides, the rink or the maze is what makes it an evening.
