Christmas characters in Bournemouth: when to meet them
Christmas characters in Bournemouth: fairies, elves and Elsa in the Square and the Lower Gardens on weekends, 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm, for 2026.
On this page
Christmas characters in Bournemouth are a weekend fixture of the 2026 season: fairies, elves and Elsa roam Bournemouth Square and the Lower Gardens every Saturday and Sunday, from 11am to 1pm and again from 2pm to 4pm, posing for photos as they go. That is the schedule the organisers, Alpine Christmas Markets, give on their Christmas characters page, read on 19 October 2026. Christmas in Bournemouth opens on Thursday 12 November.
When and where?
The organisers list two sessions on each weekend day:
- Saturdays: 11am to 1pm, then 2pm to 4pm
- Sundays: 11am to 1pm, then 2pm to 4pm
The characters move around the Square, where the Christmas market and the Alpine Lodge are, and the Lower Gardens, where the Festive Trail runs. They do not stand in one spot, and the organisers do not publish a route, so the best approach is to spend the session around the market and the top of the gardens and let them find you.
The gap between 1pm and 2pm is the obvious time for lunch at the food stalls, which the organisers list as open daily from 11am.

Who will you meet?
The organisers name fairies, elves and Elsa. Beyond that, they do not publish a full line-up, or say which characters appear on which weekend, and costumed characters at any event can vary from day to day. If a child has their heart set on one in particular, it is fairer to say "we might see her" than to promise.
These roaming characters are separate from Santa. He has booked story sessions in Santa's Workshop, covered in our guide to Story Time with Santa, and a free 5.30pm story on the Square stage, covered in Santa in Bournemouth Square.
Is it free?
Yes. The Square and the Festive Trail are free to enter, and the characters pose for photos with visitors as they go, so there is nothing to book. Photography is welcome in many areas, the organisers say. Only some attractions around them, such as the ice rink, the Christmas Tree Maze, Glow Golf and the Santa sessions, are ticketed.

A weekend morning with small children
A morning around the character sessions might look like this:
- Arrive at the Square soon after 11am, when the market opens and the first session begins.
- Pick up a Kids Trail booklet, which the organisers say is available at the Alpine Lodge, among other places, and start hunting for clues. See the Bournemouth Christmas kids trail.
- Walk down into the Lower Gardens along the trail; the rides and games there need no pre-booking.
- Break for lunch from 1pm, then catch the second session from 2pm.
The Bournemouth Guide's Bournemouth with kids page covers the rest of the town with children, and our own family activities guide has ideas for the rest of the year.
Practical points
It is outdoors and continues in most weather, so a December weekend morning needs coats, hats and gloves. The market is cashless, card and contactless only. Toilets, including accessible ones, are on site and nearby. Many outdoor areas have accessible routes, the organisers say, though some attractions have restrictions. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in many outdoor areas, though not inside some attractions.
For the full season, from the pantomime to the seafront, see the guide's Christmas guide.
Staying nearby
Flexiestays' hotels are on the West Cliff, about ten minutes on foot from the Square, so a family can walk down for the 11am session and back for a rest between sessions. Self check-in means arrival time is not tied to a reception desk, and booking direct on Serviced Apartments in Bournemouth - Book Direct is cheaper than the big platforms.
