Boscombe Chine Gardens follow the line of an old valley inland from the seafront, climbing gently away from the beach between banked lawns and flower beds. Where Alum Chine to the west is wooded and steep, this is the ornamental kind of green space — Victorian pleasure grounds that became a public park. For anyone travelling with children it holds enough to fill a slow afternoon without spending much, and it is one of the older set pieces of the Boscombe seafront.
A Victorian park, restored
The upper gardens were first laid out between 1868 and 1871 by Sir Henry Drummond Wolff, the local landowning MP, as private pleasure grounds for the houses around them. They passed into public hands in the 1880s and were developed by the borough as one of the centrepieces of the growing Boscombe resort. A long decline followed — by the 1990s parts had become a no-go area — until a Heritage Lottery Fund bid, backed by a determined group of local friends, paid for the restoration that stands today. The gardens have held a Green Flag since 2007, and Victorian touches such as the spa shelters and the old lodge survive among the newer planting.
What there is to do
Families get the most out of it. There is an eighteen-hole mini-golf course, a water play area on the site of the old boating pond, a ball court and table tennis, and a wildlife trail that threads the length of the chine. Younger visitors also come to feed the ducks. The Squirrel Café sits above the gardens for tea and cake, and the seafront land train runs into the park from the beach, carrying on along the promenade all the way to Bournemouth Pier.
Where it is
The gardens open onto the seafront in Boscombe, directly opposite Boscombe Pier, with Boscombe beach a few steps beyond the entrance. Paths through the park are surfaced and mostly gentle, which makes it easier going with a pushchair or wheelchair than the steeper chines further along this coast.
Good to know
Walking the gardens costs nothing and they are open from dawn until dusk. The mini-golf and some of the activities are charged, and several run seasonally rather than year-round, so it is worth checking current times before a special trip. For more along the seafront, the attractions on this stretch are all within an easy walk.
