Chaplins occupies a run of the Christchurch Road frontage in Boscombe, and it wears its independence plainly. Behind one door there are several connected spaces — a main bar with a proper stage, an area known as the Firehouse, and a low, brick-lined Cellar Bar beneath — and on most evenings at least one of them is given over to a band. It is the kind of place that fills up with regulars and stays open late, rather than one that empties at eleven.
The pub
The layout rewards a wander. The main bar carries the stage and runs loud and social when a band is on; downstairs, the Cellar Bar is darker and closer, the room people drift to for a quieter pint or a late one. Live music lands most nights of the week, comedy nights turn up on the bill, and one-off events fill the gaps — this is a venue that programmes its week rather than waiting for a crowd to arrive.
The drink and the food
Guest real ales rotate through the cellar, so what is on tends to change from one week to the next, and there are cocktails at the main bar alongside the usual lagers and ciders. Food comes out of a smokehouse kitchen — the on-site operation trades as Modern Times, turning out the sort of low-and-slow barbecue plates that suit a night of drinking. The kitchen keeps shorter hours than the bar, so it is worth checking before you count on eating there; on a quiet early-week night it may not be running at all.
Where it is
It sits on Christchurch Road, the long spine that runs through Boscombe towards the town centre. Boscombe Pier and the beach are downhill from here, a walk of a few minutes, so the bar slots naturally into an evening that started on the sand. The stretch of road around it has a scattering of other bars, which makes Chaplins an easy first or last stop.
Good to know
The garden is dog-friendly, and entry is step-free, which is not a given on a road of Victorian frontages. Opening runs late — into the early hours at the weekend — so this is more of an evening-and-onwards place than a lunch stop.
