Ristorante Barolo has been feeding Winton since 1994, which in restaurant terms is close to forever. Sam Barolo took the premises on at the end of 1993 and has run it ever since, expanding the dining room over the years and refurbishing it without losing what regulars come for: generous, old-school Italian cooking and a welcome that remembers your face. It is the kind of long-established independent that a well-drilled chain cannot fake.
The food
The menu is long and traditional in the best sense. Twelve-inch pizzas and a full range of pasta anchor it, but the kitchen is at its happiest with seafood and meat — fresh mussels, king prawns, and beef and veal cut from 28-day-matured joints. Portions lean hearty. Gluten-free pizza bases and pasta come on request, vegan cheese is kept behind the counter, and vegetarian and vegan dishes are marked through the menu, so the table rarely has to negotiate. This is comfort cooking, done properly and without pretension.
The setting
A 2018 refurbishment modernised the room while keeping it warm, and it has the easy hum of a place that has hosted decades of birthdays, anniversaries and ordinary weeknight dinners. It seats a fair crowd, which makes it a sensible choice for a larger group — the sort of booking a smaller kitchen would struggle to take. Service is friendly and unhurried, and the long-standing regulars are a good sign in themselves.
Where it is
Barolo sits on Wimborne Road in Winton, one of the neighbourhood high streets that run north from the town centre, well back from the seafront. Brazilian Beef is a little further up the same road and Camille Thai is close by, so this stretch is worth knowing if you are staying away from the coast. If you are based over towards Westbourne, it is an easy trip across town.

The restaurant is open seven days a week and does takeaway and delivery alongside sit-down meals, with delivery free over a minimum spend within a short radius — the threshold is worth checking when you order.
