Branksome Chine is the wooded cleft in the cliffs where the pines run almost down to the water, and Rockwater sits at the bottom of it, a few steps from the sand. The building is glass-fronted and does several jobs at once — a ground-floor bar and kitchen, a roof terrace above, and casual shacks out on the beach itself. It keeps long hours, from early coffee to evening drinks. You pay seafront prices for the position, but on a clear afternoon, with Poole Bay laid out below the terrace, most people decide the view earns it.
The food
The kitchen runs an all-day menu that starts with breakfast and moves through small plates, local seafood — Dorset crab among it — and a proper burger. Wood-fired pizza comes out from lunchtime, and cream teas appear in the afternoon. There are kids’ menus and vegetarian choices, and the bar turns out cocktails to match the setting. It is crowd-pleasing food rather than destination cooking, and reviews are honest that quality and service can wobble when the terrace is full. Order simply, take your time, and check current menus on the venue’s own site before you set out.
The setting
Downstairs, the bar and kitchen face straight out to sea through full-height glass. The roof terrace opens on selected days and is the seat everyone wants, warmed for cooler evenings and open to the bay. Out on the sand, the Branksome and Sandbanks shacks handle coffee, ice cream and quick bites without a booking. Dogs are welcome under the venue’s own policy, and there is a regular programme of events and live music. The whole place is built to face the water rather than sit back from it.

Rockwater is on Pinecliff Road, BH13 6LP, at the foot of Branksome Chine, midway along the promenade between Bournemouth and Sandbanks in the Poole half of the bay. Pinecliff Gardens drop down through the pines from the clifftop above, and Branksome Dene Chine car park sits alongside. In summer the promenade walk in is often faster than the queue for a space.
Good to know
Hours differ by area and season — the terrace and the shacks do not keep the same times as the bar and kitchen — so it is worth booking ahead for the terrace and checking before a special journey.
